Medical Program:

At present, the University runs three joint programs formally approved by the Ministry of Education and the Office of Degree-granting of the State Council:
1. CHEMBA Master of Business Administration for High-ranking Executives on the job
This program was approved by the Ministry of Education and the Degree-granting Office of the State Council in 1999, and is co-managed by the Lingnan (University) College of the University and the Carson School of Management of the University of Minnesota in the US.
2. DESS Master in International Trade
The Sino-French DESS program offering master degree in international trade is co-managed by the municipal government of Lyons, France and the Foundation of Education in State Enterprise Management, the School of Business Management in No. 3 University of France, the Institute of Higher Management in Lyons and the Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University, and is a Sino-foreign Cooperative School Program in training professionals at the tertiary level. The program had run 4 sessions since 1998, and the fifth session is now enrolling.
3、 Undergraduate education in Chinese
Approved by the Ministry of Education, Sun Yat-sen University and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages in Vietnam cooperate in offering undergraduate education in Chinese for Vietnamese students. The main program is based on the “Curricula of the Specialty in Chinese language (university level)” of the university, and is implemented in the mode of “2 plus 2” (The students study in Vietnam for two years, then come to Sun Yat-sen University for two more years.) Both parties will work together to train advanced students of Chinese for Vietnam according to the characteristics of the Vietnamese students. Upon passing the examinations, the qualified students will be awarded the diploma of undergraduate studies and the degree of Bachelor. The first batch of students have begun their four-year undergraduate studies in Hanoi in November 2003.
Office of International Cooperation and Exchange
Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs
Formally the Office of External Affairs, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange was named in 1999 after reforms in the university organizational structure were carried out. There are four sections: Office of International Students, Section of Overseas Affairs, Section of Academic Exchange, and Section of General Affairs. It also serves as the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs.
The main responsibility of the office is to conduct international cooperation and exchange in education and research via all channels and to serve as the connection between the University and the international academic world. Its daily routines include: enrolment and management of international students, handling of application and visa for short-term (less than six months) business visits to foreign countries (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan areas), hiring of long-term and short-term foreign experts, reception of visiting scholars and guests, handling of programs run by foundations, conducting academic exchange with foreign universities and those beyond the mainland and establishing relation; application and management of hosting international academic conference by the University, etc.
In order to serve the teaching and learning and research better, the Department has formulated a series of regulations for handling foreign affairs as instructed by the departments at the higher rank and based on the conditions of the office, so as to conduct our work in the regular, procedural and scientific way and to provide high-efficiency, good-quality service.

Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences originated from Boji Medical School which was established in 1866 and was the earliest institution of learning and practice of western medicine of China .
Sun Yat-sen University or Zhongshan University , established in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen , a great revolutionary of 20 th century, is a multi-disciplinary, key comprehensive university of Chinese Central Government . It is under direct administration of Ministry of Education, China . It is among the first ranked universities in China and has been accepted into “211 Project” by the central government.
During the 2001 re-organization of universities by the government of China , the former ‘ Sun Yat-sen University ‘ and ‘ Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences’ were merged together to form the present Sun Yat-sen University . After merger, the former Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences is known as Sun Yat-sen College Of Medical Sciences. Dr. Sun Yat-sen himself studied medicine in this college.
Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Sciences is a comprehensive medical school with multi-specialties, multi-curriculum and multi-programs. There are 40 research centers, institutions and laboratories. There are two mobile post-doctorate research stations, 77 academic departments, 30 specialties which are accredited to confer master’s degrees and 8 undergraduate programs of studies.
Library has a collection of more than 500,000 volumes of books and over 5,000 different titles of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. Staff strength is 7000 among them about 1100 are high ranking teachers, doctors and other professionals.
Currently, there are over 4,000 students studying medicine. Since 1954, this medical college has admitted about 300 foreign students from 56 countries of 5 continents. In 1987, the University began to enroll foreign students for various post-graduate and doctoral programs
University has established academic exchange with more than 10 well-known universities, academic institutes and societies in countries and areas of America , Canada , Japan , Australia , England , France and Germany , and has signed exchange agreements with 40 of them.
