General Information

Peking University offers 4 different study programs to foreign students. For those considering pursuing a course of study at Peking University, we ask you to carefully read about the major fields of study listed in this brochure to see whether the center offers a program in your area of interest.

Peking University offers graduate study leading to a master’s degree or doctoral degree. The objective of the programs is to train the next generation of medical scientists to approach medical issues with a thorough understanding and systematic knowledge of medical theories and practice. The graduate program has two types: clinical specialization and laboratory research.

Admission of International Students

Entering the University

Peking University is very interested in diversifying its student body with the admission of students from other countries. We are pleased that you are considering a program at Peking University and welcome you to apply for admission. Application materials for foreign students are available from the Foreign Students Office or via our website. Please read and follow all instructions carefully regarding the latest information about Peking University. Peking University will ensure an efficient and accurate processing of your application.

Applying for Admission

Applicants are asked to submit their credentials, as described in the application requirements below, in one envelope. This process assures each applicant that all necessary materials will be received at Peking University by the application deadline. Please make sure your name appears on all forms submitted.

Doctoral Degree

1) Applicants holding a master’s degree or equivalent

2) Two letters of recommendation from two university professors

3) A statement of financial resources and status information

4) Official university/college transcripts.

Advanced program

1) Applicants holding a medical education background or equivalent

2) Two letters of recommendation from two university professors

Application Procedures

1. Students Seeking Scholarship from Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC)

Applications are to be sent to the respective Chinese embassies in your country, which are mandated by the Chinese Scholarship Council to conduct official examination and enrollment. Please consult the Chinese Embassy in your country for details.

2. Students: Self-financed

The application form can be sent to our Foreign Student Office by mail, but should be with your application letter and required documentation. Be sure to include your full name and a mailing address; we cannot send the admission letter via e-mail.

Applicants for undergraduate education are required to take the General Knowledge Examinations for foreign students given by Peking University and the Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) given by Ministry of Education, China. Applicants for graduate programs are required to take a special entrance examination given by our Center and an HSK examination (those who graduated from a Chinese college are exempted from the HSK examination). The General Knowledge Examination is given on the second Saturday of April at our Foreign Student Office.

Students applying for undergraduate study are required to achieve a score of C in the intermediate Level HSK. Applicants for graduate programs are required to pass the special entrance examinations and achieve a score of A in the intermediate Level HSK.

The enrollment takes place before the end of June every year. Those who are qualified will receive an Admission Letter from Peking University Health Science Center and a Visa application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China (JW202). Applicants will need the two documents to obtain a student visa (X) at the Chinese Embassy.

General Information
Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as “Yan Yuan”(the garden of Yan), is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing, with a total area of 2,743,532 square metres (or 274 hectares). Peking University stands near to the Yuanmingyuan Garden and the Summer Palace.

History
Founded in 1898, Peking University was originally known as the Imperial University of Peking. Peking University was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in China since its establishment. Peking University also served as the highest administration for education at the beginning of its founding.

In 1912, Peking University adopted its present name. At the end of the 20th century, the Chinese government put Peking University at the top of its agenda for promoting higher education, with the aim to build a world-class university in the 21st Century. After merging with Beijing Medical University in 2000, Peking University once again was strengthened in its disciplinary structure.

Peking University has continually played the essential role of pioneers in the course of China’s modernization. The university’s traditional emphasis on patriotism, progress, democracy, and science, together with its educational standards of diligence, precision, factualism, and innovation, have been passed down from generation to generation.
